Leather 101: Our Guide to Different Types of Leather Jackets
Not there there’s ever really a ‘bad’ time to wear a leather jacket, but as the frost from winter dissipates and spring welcomes us with warmer weather and longer days, it’s high time to swap out your heavy, goose down jacket for something lighter and more trendy.
The question then becomes: which type of leather jacket is right for me?
While it may seem like an easy questions to answer, there are more styles than you might think. We would know! Leather jackets are all we do. So, whether you’re looking for something edgy, classic, or something in between, use this guide to help you explore some of your options.
The Biker Jacket
Ah, the biker jacket. It’s at once rock n’ roll and classic, bringing to mind a number of legends including (but not limited to!) James Dean, Marlon Brando and Mick Jagger. Of course, this is a staple in both men’s and women’s wardrobes. Biker jackets are typified by details like zippers, pockets and belts but, you don’t have to go all out with the bells and whistles.
The best part? Biker jackets are incredibly versatile. Pair it with a pair of dark wash jeans and a t-shirt or, ladies, give a flowy summer dress some edge by throwing a black leather jacket on top of it.
The Racer Jacket
Although slightly more understated than the biker jacket, the racer jacket still makes a statement. It most commonly has a center zip, round neck and minimal ‘extras’ like belts and zippers.
If we had to chose one ‘must-have’ on this list, it’d be the racer jacket. It’s simple, timeless and can be worn with just about anything.
The Bomber Jacket
Also known as a flight jacket, the bomber jacket is a great option for those looking for a slightly more sophisticated leather jacket. If you’ve seen Top Gun (and who hasn’t?) you’re familiar with this style. Some have a detachable collar, but all have signature ribbed cuffs, hems and two large front pockets.
A bomber jacket is effortlessly cool and casual, but also (somehow) professional, making it a great option for your work commute in spring or fall.
Exploring Different Materials
We know what you’re thinking - what materials are there to explore? We’re talking about leather jackets. But, there are a number of different types of leather, including cowhide, bison leather, deerskin, goatskin, sheepskin, lambskin and calfskin.
At LG Styles, we work with sheepskin and goatskin exclusively, creating high-quality and durable leather and suede products. Both sheepskin and goatskin are notoriously light, soft and flexible, making them the creme de la creme of leather. The feel is luxurious and supple and while they look great brand new, they only get better with age!
Quality is Key
Whatever your style preferences, when purchasing a leather jacket, quality should be a deciding factor. Afterall, a leather jacket is a big purchase and, if you make the right choice, it should last you for years and years to come.
So, what how will you know a quality leather jacket when you see one? Careful, quality stitching, easy-to-zip zippers, and how it fits are all telltale signs. While you may be dubious to order your leather jacket online, you’ll know the quality as soon as you put it on.
